Thatching Services

I offer complete roofs to patching, ridging plain or ornamental – I can provide a wrap over style or a bargain budget butt up.

The re-thatching of a roof requires scaffolding and the removal of the old wire and cement fillets, as well as, stripping off the old ridge and removal of the eaves and top coat to a firm base. I will then check the wall plates and rafter ends and repair if needed. Then I will fix a new eave and apply a new top coat to the pre paired base to minimum thickness of 300mm or 12" fixing it with home grown English twisted hazel spars.

For the best results, I will ridge the new roof with a wrap over style ridge in keeping with the house and local conservation team should the property be listed. I recommend the wrap over ridge other than the cheaper Butt Up ridge, but I am happy to price for either.

On completion the roof is brushed and dressed and will be wired with new cement fillets according to the materials used. Then will wheat reed or long straw the entire roof or water reed the ridge only.

I offer a patching and or sheeting service for new customer whilst waiting for me to start there roof a small fee is payable although refunded when the roof has been started - My quotes can include all woodwork, brick work, re-pointing and flashings.

The materials I use to complete the roof are my own grown wheat reed or local grown where possible with little chemical input. Good quality imported water reed usually Hungarian. English spars instead of imported pre-twisted ones. Once I have sourced good materials, I take care and sensitively apply to the roof.
